Worthing Mental Health Awareness Week

Monday, September 18, 2017

Worthing Mental Health Week in 2017 is being held at the Offington Park Methodist Church, Broadwater Green, South Farm Road, Worthing BN14 7TN.

The aim of the event, now in its 5th year, is to challenge the stigma around mental health issues and to provide a range of information in a safe and non-judgemental environment. All events held during the week are free. There are workshops, talks and information from over 40 local organisations and charities who offer support.

Starting on Monday 9 October, the launch, at 10 am with Mayor Cllr Alex Harman, is followed by Diversity and Wellbeing with Eleanor Hope; a Drumming Workshop with Dan Gilmore and Buddies Cafe at 2.45pm with Worthing Mental Health Carers Open Meeting at 7 pm.

On Tuesday the focus is on Dementia with a packed day of workshops, information, meetings, and talks. The West Sussex Library Service is available all day with their Memory Box resources - why not come and reminisce?

This is followed at 9.45 by Laughter for Wellness and Wellbeing by Worthing Laughter Club. Find out how the science behind laughter can improve your physical and emotional wellbeing.

At 11.30 am Art for Wellbeing has a printing workshop with all materials supplied. Why not bring a packed lunch or use the cafes and shops nearby?

Worthing Town Cryers and Tim Wilkins from the Alzheimers Society will talk about how it is possible to live well with dementia and enjoy life.

The afternoon continues with Will Power Worthing talking about Powers of Attorney and Trust Funds. This is followed by Worthing Dementia Action Alliance Open Meeting - everyone is welcome at 4pm. Hear Ian Macara from Bennett Griffin LLP Worthing explaining Lasting Powers of Attorney and learn all about what is happening in your community and how we are all working together to make it a more dementia friendly place in which to live and work.

The day closes with a Dementia Friends session which is open to all who would like to become a Dementia Friend. This starts at 6 pm and is roughly an hour of light-hearted interactivity which explains in a very down-to-earth manner what dementia is and how better to understand someone with dementia.
